Grow Canola

Biotechnology

The adoption of Herbicide Tolerant (HT) canola has provided many economic benefits for Canadian growers. What is even more important is the long-term value that has been created from the improved environmental impacts and reduction in herbicide applications. Ultimately, long-term agricultural sustainability is rooted in restorative land management practices.

This report provides a snapshot of canola production in 2006. The changes from 1995 to 2006 are substantial. This report is the first of its kind in that it quantifies additional impacts that have resulted from the commercialization and adoption of HT canola. The findings of this report demonstrate that the benefits of HT canola are two-fold. First, there are immediate financial benefits experienced by farmers. Second, there are long-term environmental benefits to both farmers and the society within which they live.
