WTO talks "this close" before collapse
World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations were as close as they ever have been before they fell apart this week, according to Rick White, general manager of the Canadian Canola Growers Association, who attended the talks in Geneva, Switzerland as part of a Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) delegation.
The collapse of the Doha Round of the WTO now means it will be quite a while before large-scale trade talks pick up again, considering that a US presidential election is around the corner, says White.
This is particularly disappointing to the Canadian canola industry, because Canada is now left to handle international trade issues through bilateral talks.
"Canada is a smaller player on the international trade stage so it is a real challenge for us to negotiate bilaterals with the big players, like China and India. We would have had bigger gains over the long run with a WTO deal," says JoAnne Buth, president of the Canola Council. "But we will continue to take our message to Canadian trade negotiators, and reiterate our position that we export 80% of our canola crop and therefore need to address tariffs, tariff escalation and trade-distorting subsidies."

Olympian takes canola message to radio audience
A radio media tour for Olympic swimmer and CanolaInfo spokesperson Janet Evans has been one of the most successful in CanolaInfo’s history. According to MediaLink, the company that arranges and provides technical support for the interviews, they reached about 64 million listeners, many in the top 25 cities in the US.
Twenty radio outlets across the United States requested interviews with Evans (all done from a central location), including six national shows, two in syndication and available for pickup by several more stations.
As CanolaInfo spokesperson, Evans talks about using canola oil in recipes for the whole family as part of a healthy, physically active lifestyle.
