History		 All pesticides (herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) must be registered by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency before using the product. Use only registered pesticides on canola and always apply at the label rate and at the timing listed on the label. Always follow the pre-harvest interval because applying the product too close to harvest can result in higher residue levels.
Market Issues Canada - 25% of the canola grown in Canada is consumed in Canada. If residues of an unregistered pesticide are detected in Canada, the crop could be seized and growers could be charged under the federal Pest Control Products Act and/or Food and Drug Act.

Countries are becoming increasingly strict about residues in the commodities they import. The U.S. has a zero limit for pesticides that do not have an approved tolerance.

Japan is the number one customer of Canadian canola seed and imports over $450 million each year. The Japanese industry is very concerned over pesticide residues and the Japanese government is introducing new food safety legislation that will prohibit entry of any commodities if pesticide residues are found above the allowable limit. If any pesticide is detected above the allowable limit in Japan the shipment will be rejected resulting in millions of dollars of losses and increased testing of all shipments to Japan. The herbicide Amitrol has a very low allowable limit.

Recommendation to Growers Use only registered pesticides when required. For Amitrol herbicide strictly follow the label rates and use only as a pre-plant application to ensure that no residues will remain in the canola. Japan has a very low allowable limit for residues of Amitrol in canola.
