Wheat and durum acreage has also increased, but about 2 million fewer acres have been put into summerfallow. For a report on the StatsCan numbers from an Alberta perspective, go to: http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/news/calgarybusiness/story.html?id=e65ba715-1c89-42d1-826c-8899c1c1d027
NYC trans fat ban compliance deadline nears – The deadline for New York City restaurants to drop trans fat from their menus is July 1, and the city has hired a trans fat guru to help keep them on track. Laura Stanley is a Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia alumna, and as part of her role, she has created the website www.notransfatnyc.org
Among other things, the site lists the many alternatives to which food service operations can turn. Canola oil products are at the top of the list because each list begins with the products that contain the least amount of saturated fat.
For a more in-depth story including the effort to keep sat fat levels down, read The New York Times at: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/21/nyregion/21trans.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin
Bunge opens new refinery in Hamilton – Bunge North America cut the ribbon on its new $60-million oil refinery in Hamilton, ON on Monday. The company formerly operated a refinery in Toronto, but began the process of moving it to Hamilton almost 10 years ago.
The new refinery is right across the street from Bunge’s crushing plant. Both facilities process canola and soybean oil. About 25 new jobs have been added for a total workforce of about 130.

Canola oil for kids – Today’s Parent Magazine clears up confusion about good and bad fats in its June 2008 issue. In a clipout section, the Canadian publication recommends canola oil as one of the best sources for omega-3 and monounsaturated fat.
Turkey producers recommend canola oil – Turkey producer organizations including the Manitoba Turkey Producers and Granny’s Poultry are recommending canola oil for deep frying turkey. In a brochure inserted into daily newspapers, the turkey producers say canola oil is best for deep frying because of its high smoke point and because it is generally considered free of allergens.
