Cargill Introduces Lower Saturated Fat, High-Stability Canola Oil
Cargill announced on June 1 that it will begin customer testing a high-stability canola oil with only 4 to 4.5 percent saturated fat in early 2010. This is nearly a 43-percent reduction in saturated fat from commodity canola oil. Cargill's Clear Valley® low saturate canola oil may allow food makers to differentiate their brands with low, reduced or no saturated fat claims on product labels. Commercial release of the higher monounsaturated fat canola oil is anticipated by 2013.

2009 Canadian Canola Acres May Be Higher Than Expected
The nearly 15 million acres of Canadian canola predicted by Statistics Canada for 2009 could be even higher, according to analysts. Though they don’t agree on the exact amount, some speculate that there could be up to 16 million acres seeded this year. Meanwhile, wheat remains steady and barley acres are expected to go down.

Funding May Help Canola Product Development
The Growing Canadian Agri-Innovations Program will provide $158 million in federal funds to jumpstart new ideas in agricultural products and production. Distributed in shares to Canadian farmers, producers and researchers, the money could help the canola industry meet the growing demand for canola products.

Canola Oil Recommended by Nutrition Spokesperson
In response to a question of which cooking oil is the healthiest, a University of Alberta Human Nutrition Research Unit spokesperson said canola oil because it contains omega-3 and monounsaturated fats. Alpha-linolenic acid, the omega-3 in canola oil, must be obtained through food because the body cannot make it.

Company Goes Nuts for Canola Oil
Germack Pistachio Company has introduced a new cashew and pistachio blend made with high-oleic canola oil called Castachio Nuts. Germack uses canola oil exclusively because it has "the healthiest fat profile of any oil in the marketplace."

Dow AgroSciences Canada Invests in Canola Research
Dow AgroSciences Canada and the National Research Council Plant Biotechnology Institute in Saskatoon have extended a research and product development partnership for another five-year term. They will focus on developing new canola oil profiles and improving agronomic productivity in canola. Over the past 10 years, the collaboration has led to such breakthroughs as canola with higher oil levels and more nutritious canola meal.
