Article Praises Canola Oil, Debunks Myths
Canola oil is far and away one of the most healthful options when it comes to cooking oil, according to the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram. The article also debunked myths that cooking oils, such as canola oil, create their own trans fat when heated in the home. In fact, this does not begin to happen until an oil reaches its smoke point, which rarely happens outside of a deep fryer.

BASF Researchers Uncover Secrets to Producing Omega-3s in Canola
Researchers from BASF Plant Science have successfully found a way to get canola to create long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (canola oil naturally contains a medium-chain omega-3). Studies have shown that omega-3s may help lower the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease. Long-chain omega-3s are normally derived from marine sources, but can now be produced in canola plants for future use in foods like yogurt and cheese.

Located in the town of Montoir, it will process up to 600,000 metric tonnes of canola per year. Opened on Sept. 18, the plant will produce 250,000 metric tonnes of canola oil and 350,000 metric tonnes of protein-rich canola meal.

Canola Study Presented at International Congress of Dietetics
On behalf of CanolaInfo, Dr. Guy Johnson, president of Johnson Nutrition Solutions, presented results of a canola oil modeling study at the 15th International Congress of Dietetics in Yokohama, Japan on Sept. 9. The study was previously published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association and contributed to the authorization of the U.S. qualified health claim for canola oil. The meeting had 3,000 attendees from at least 40 countries, including the leaders of national dietetic associations.

Canola Oil Hits the Mark on Right Fats
Certain fats are beneficial to human health like omega-3s and unsaturated fats, both contained in canola oil. Alice Lichtenstein, director of the cardiovascular nutrition laboratory at the USDA's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, laid out which fats help the body and which ones can cause problems like trans and saturated fat. Canola oil contains omega-3s, no trans fat and has the lowest amount of saturated fat among common cooking oils.
